Barton sales manager, Christian Brewer was once again competing in the famous X One Design class at this year’s Cowes Week. Sailing ‘Lone Star’ with eight times winner Stuart Jardine and son Mark Jardine, who is also co-owner of Yachts & Yachting magazine

Racing started on the first Saturday with ‘Lone Star’ recording a solid second place, this was followed on the Sunday with an impressive first place, putting the team in a fantastic position to push on for the rest of the week.

Following the impressive start, disaster struck for the team on the Monday when an extreme line bias prevented starboard yachts from laying the pin-end, ‘Relaxation’ helmed by Alistair Ashford was forced into an extreme manoeuvre which resulted in ‘Lone Star’ being hit hard on the rear quarter. The impact badly injured Stuart’s right hand on the tiller with the extension snapping off and hitting him in the face. The team carried on posting a respectable 19th place but the injury proved to be too severe for Stuart to continue racing for the remainder of the week. A new crew member, Chester Maudsley, joined the team with Mark Jardine taking over at helm, himself no slouch in the XOD class having come second in 2004. The new team carried on racing all week, coming in at an excellent fifth position overall.

The convincing overall winner’s of the XOD Captain’s Cup were the Lawrence brothers aboard ‘Catherine’ with Patrick Smart completing the team. It was a very well deserved win for the trio, especially considering the team have been runners-up in the event on four previous occasions.

Two extremely talented youngsters took the next two final places in the standings. Second placed Ben Paton is the current World and European Laser Radial champion, he sailed his Grandfather’s XOD ‘XL which was even more poignant as he had recently passed away. Third place went to Andy Shaw sailing ‘Pheonix’, currently the World University Match Racing Champion, definitely another one to watch out for next year.

After a truly successful week, the X One Design was by far the biggest fleet at Cowes with 88 boats taking part. With over 100 entries expected next year, it is looking in really great shape for its Centenary celebrations in 2011.

Lone Star features a new design Barton size 1 re-circulating ball bearing traveller car with slide bolt track for ultimate low profile and smoothness of operation.
