THE LAUNCH OF THE CORNISH CRABBER 26
We recently paid a visit to British boat builder, Cornish Crabbers based in Rock where we were lucky enough to see the first build of their newest model, the Cornish Crabber 26. She is the latest addition to Cornish Crabbers range of traditional sailing yachts from 17 to 30 foot, all built by master craftsmen to order.
 |
|
The 26 is described as a modern day family cruiser, featuring full standing headroom throughout, with shallow draft and centreboard. The boat is fitted with a full Barton inventory on board, which with the highly specified rigging will make for extremely easy handling and high performance in all conditions.
The first boat produced will make its way in July to her owner in Falmouth. The second 26 will be on display at this year's Southampton Boat Show, with the third heading to the La Rochelle show a few weeks later, definitely worth taking a look at if paying a visit to either show!

SAIL SAFE INC INTRODUCE NEW ANTI-JIBE SYSTEM
One of our American customers, Sail Safe Inc has recently developed a unique system for preventing crash jibes, using a range of Barton equipment. Like all of the very best ideas, the Anti-Jibe system is really simple yet highly effective in operation. The system is designed for yachts up to 45 feet and can be used effectively in winds of up to 30 knots.
 |
The system is a must for peace of mind when running downwind when the wind gets frisky as I am sure most of you will know of someone who has been hit by a swinging, uncontrolled boom. In some circumstances the consequences can be extremely serious and involve medical attention, so any means of stabilising the boom downwind has to be considered. The beauty of this Sail Safe system is that it can be set up from the cockpit with no need to go up on deck, whilst locking and disengaging the boom is incredibly quick, easy and safe.
For further details on the new system and to see a video of how it works, check out the web site at www.anti-jibe.com |

'CARTE BLANCHE' – A BEAUTIFUL SWAN ONCE MORE
The end of April saw the world's oldest Swan sailing yacht still in use launched at Pendennis Shipyard. 'Carte Blanche', the third 36ft Swan ever built, has been at Pendennis since November 2009 for an extensive refit which included a full engine rebuild, full respray, complete varnish work inside and out, and the complete replacement of her galley equipment. She was also given new sole boards throughout and all of her sailing gear was modernised to include the latest Barton Size 3 mainsheet traveler system and a host of Barton sail control blocks.
Built in 1967 by renowned yacht builders, Nautor's Swan, 'Carte Blanche' has been in the possession of her current owner since 1970. Her rebuild was overseen by project manager Roeland Vroon, himself a top offshore helm, who will be campaigning alongside the owner of 'Carte Blanche' at the forthcoming Swan Rendezvous 2010 in Guernsey at the end of May. The owner of 'Carte Blanche' commented, "The boat is now looking stunning and I hope that the team at Pendennis is as proud of the result as I am." |
THE BARTON G23 WINCH ON TEST
For those of you who saw the June issue of Practical Boat Owner, you would have seen their feature which tested 8 winches from the marine industries top brands, including the Barton G23 winch! Alongside the Barton winch were winches from other brands including Holt Nautos, Holmatro, Andersen, Harken Radial, Antal and Lewmar.
The testing was split into two parts to really put the winches through their paces. The first was a low load test, aimed at testing how resistant the winches were to riding turns, a problem many boat owners repeatedly curse at! The test included a jig set up on a standard workbench with masses changed between 50kg and 15kg, changes in length of line and line entry angles altered, which ultimately simulated riding turns. Approximate measure of slip was noted along with how many turns it took to fill the drum. The second, high load test took place at Lewmar's test facility in Havant. Weights were set up to cause the load on the line to increase as it was hauled in, with the testers seeing at what point the winch would slip.
The Barton G23 and rubber wincher were put on test with extremely positive results, the Barton gear fairing well in the low load testing and reaching over 200kg of weight with no slippage in the heavy load testing. This was particularly impressive when comparing the G23 and wincher to the other brands on test as some did not perform as well as the Barton winch even though they were sometimes over double the price! Click here to see the full Barton write up.
The tests final verdict chose the Barton G23 & wincher as its pro choice quoting some of its reasons being that it was 'spectacular value for money' and 'incredibly easy to maintain', giving it the edge on more expensive brands. A fantastic result! Click here to see the whole of PBO's 'Pro Verdict'.

MARINE INDUSTRY REGATTA 2010
Barton Marine’s joint team with distributor Navimo were back once again to defend their Marine Industry Sailing Regatta title, which was held in the Solent on Wednesday the 21st April. The event is held each year to encourage professionals within the marine industry to compete in a relaxed and friendly day of racing with all proceeds made donated to the John Merrick’s Sailing Trust, which offers young talented sailors financial support as they climb the Olympic sailing ladder.
The event was kicked off on the Tuesday evening before the event with a pre-race dinner at Sunsail’s Port House, based at Port Solent. British Sailing President and Barton Marine Operation’s Director Paul Botterill presented a cheque for £1,200 to the John Merricks Trust with diners contributing a further £146 in loose change, a great result!
 |
Wednesday morning saw the racing begin in brilliant bright sunshine and light northerly winds. The 2010 Barton/Navimo crew taking part consisted of David Barrow, Scott Dawson, Christian Brewer and Paul Botterill from Barton, along with Neil Paramour (Force Four), Peter Legg, Howard Stocker and John Howard, all from Navimo. The racing took place in the Eastern Solent with a beat set from Ryde Pier to Portsmouth Harbour, where it got particularly light and shifty. Team Brunton Propellers romped away to victory with two wins and a second place, the team seemed to be turbo charged all day! Team Barton/ Navimo scored a respectable 11 points giving them joint second with Team Boating Business, but were later relegated to third on highest individual placings scored. |

The Regatta was hailed a tremendous success by all with planning for 2011 already under way. We have been promised a really exciting ride next year with the Sunsail fleet from this year’s regatta being replaced with Beneteau First 40’s, now that really is something to look forward to!

FROM THE ARCHIVES
We have been searching through the archives as we compile a new Barton history section for the web site and we have found two gems from the Barton history books for you to enjoy.
The first is a newsletter from 1963 with the title tag line "To Live We Must Export" and talks about the world’s changing economy, it makes an interesting read especially given the economic climate today. Click this link to see the newsletter.

BOOMSTRUT ADVANTAGES
The Barton Boomstrut is one of our most popular products with thousands sold all around the world. The Boomstrut can be fitted extremely easily and offers both cruising and racing sailors a cost effective way to eliminate the hassle of boom control. It is made with non corroding material throughout making it incredibly durable and the patented flexing spring gives a lightening fast response whilst ensuring almost constant upward force on the boom. Below are some more advantages the Boomstrut offers to both cruising and racing sailors alike:-
Advantages for the Cruising Sailor
- Cheaper than any other comparable system.
- Offers increased safety when reefing – no more topping lift as the Boomstrut will stop the boom from dropping on deck, resulting in a clean reefing manouver.
- Easier to hoist the sails as the boom is level and stable.
- Allows you to scandalize the main easier for controlled mooring up.
- Makes cruising more enjoyable!
Advantages for the Racing Sailor
- Cheaper and lighter than a gas strut with less windage.
- None of Gnav system’s associated mainsail airflow disturbance.
- It can be inverted for use with mast base instruments, with no loss of performance.
- Allows perfect control of the leech in light air, both upwind and downwind.
- Offers a tactical advantage on the start line – the main can be scandalized to slow down.
- The unique spring action means you can sheet the main against the boomstrut with a loose kicker, which you cannot do as smoothly with a Gnav system.
- There is no boom shake on tight reaches when the kicker is released to avoid broaching.
- It looks cool!
If you want even more confirmation on the great advantages of the Barton Boomstrut then here is a quote from Simon Russell – (Etchells double World Champion, XOD double Captains Cup winner, Melges 24 World and European Champion and Mumm 30 European Champion)
'I will say that the boomstrut was easily adapted to fit our boat. It made an instant transformation to the control we have over the mainsail leech! In light airs it stops the leech closing down and in a short chop eliminates any panting to the mainsail that we used to experience, so it gives a lot more confidence in those tricky light air conditions!'

PRE-SEASON HARDWARE CHECKS COULD SAVE YOU A FORTUNE
Failed blocks and mast sheaves can cause considerably more damage and subsequent cost than just replacing them with new ones. Here, we offer some practical advice on carrying out some simple pre-season deck hardware maintenance.
Blocks and Mast sheaves
Flush through with fresh water if you have left them exposed to the elements over the winter, you can use a mild detergent to remove mould and mildew, make sure it is ecologically friendly though. Do not oil or grease, this attracts dirt and salt which is abrasive.
Check for excessive movement on the bearings of both blocks and sheaves, especially at the mast head. A broken mast sheave invites the halyard to jam itself at the worst possible moment with a trip aloft the only alternative to remove a sail. Barton carries a range of sheave sizes from 30mm up to 70mm diameter or you can contact your mast manufacturer for replacements. If you cannot get the exact same diameter, that’s ok, as long as you make sure your replacement sheave is a tight fit width ways in the mast casing to prevent your mouseline jumping off the sheave and jamming.

For ball bearing blocks, the sheaves should spin freely, again flush through with fresh water. Any graunching or uneven spin after flushing would suggest the block has been overloaded. Ball bearing blocks are not suitable for high static loads, such as round the mast base, replace with a plain bearing block or one with a higher rolling load rating.
If you are thinking about replacing blocks, there are a number of factors to consider -specification, safe working load, purchase; always seek professional advice from your chandler or the manufacturer to ensure safe use and ease of control of the sails and rig.
Mainsheet Traveller and Genoa cars
To ensure your mainsheet traveller is in tip top condition before re-launching, rinse thoroughly with a hose pipe and fresh water, especially the underbody where the ball bearings run in the car and along the track. Again you can use a mild detergent solution for stubborn salt deposits as it will not harm the anodising. Take time to look at the end fittings on the traveller, crash gybes are usually the cause of fractures. Add spare end fittings to your ‘to do’ list. You will need to remove the traveller car to do this so be sure to seek out or source a short length of track to transfer the traveller car onto for repair. Flush through your control line cam cleats with water under pressure, the cams should open and return freely, if not unscrew them and disassemble to check for broken return springs. Worn cam jaws reduce the efficiency of the cleat and will require a new replacement. Go for the highest specification cleat you can afford for a longer life.
With genoa cars, check for signs of excessive movement about the sheave bearing. A small amount of play is acceptable but any more than this may cause the sheave to lock up under load. Warning signs are excessive wear to one side of the sheave where it is not rotating. Sheaves can be replaced so long as the car has been regularly flushed through and looked after, Heavy corrosion of the aluminium around the spindle makes it impossible to repair.
The list of jobs to do may seem endless, but get the important ones over with now and the remainder can be saved for a sunny day in dock or at anchor!

BOOT DUSSELDORF REPORT
We have just returned from another successful trip to one of Europe’s most important boat shows, Boot Dusseldorf where our products had some great exposure throughout the show. It was really good to speak to our exclusive German distributor, Robert Lindemann KG as well as a number of our German customers and get some valued feedback on how business is going in their market as well as hearing about how well the our own products are doing. |
| |
|
| |
We had a fantastic presence at the show on the Robert Lindemann KG stand where three large Barton merchandising stands displayed a range of our equipment including the mainsheet traveller systems and T Track accessories. Also on display was a range of cleaning products from our sister company Swobbit Europe.
There was plenty of interest reported in the Barton and Swobbit brands thanks to some great exposure from retailers such as AWN who has a big spread of both brands in their new 2010 catalogue.
Around the show Barton products were highly visible on a number of craft such as the innovative Smartkat catamarans, which have been fitted with custom orange and dark grey Barton blocks and cleats. Smartkat reports good forward orders for this year with as many as 200 boat sales predicted, thanks to the expansion of their dealer and distributor network in Europe. TOPCAT boss Eric Brandsetter was pretty pleased with the show overall. Barton supplies the jib furling units for a number of catamarans within the Top Cat range whose Class association is active on the European lakes as well as number of international venues – Dubai World’s next!
Barton was also seen at the show on:
Varianta 18 – the revived sailing yacht from Dehler
Doering Boot – a Dutch dinghy manufacturer
Dorguloff – a French beach cat manufacturer
Tes 28 – a Polish built 28’ yacht
Tofinou – a French builder of very designer dayboats for the ‘well heeled’. They use our boomstrut with custom black rods to complement the carbon rig. |

LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW REPORT
With final attendance figures at just 10% down, the show finished on an upbeat note with the busiest last weekend anyone can remember since the show opened at Excel in 2003. The weather reports made certain everyone stayed at home at the beginning of the week but the ‘die-hards’ still attended and there were plenty of Barton enquiries at our booth on the Navimo stand. |
| |
|
| |
It was great to have visits from foreign based yacht owners looking to update their deck hardware and from UK based cruising and club racing sailors. Mailspeed, Jimmy Green and TCS reported strong sales of Barton equipment and seemed overall pretty pleased with sales.
Barton equipment featured on a number of new yachts including the entire Cornish Crabber range, the cute British Hunter H 20 Sport lf and Swallow Boats BayCruiser. |

BOATING ON A BUDGET RAISES £17,000 FOR RNLI BOATHOUSE APPPEAL
In our last issue we reported about a special project we have been involved in to help the RNLI in Burnham-on-Crouch raise much needed funds for their Floating Boathouse Appeal. This month we are delighted to announce that the successful ‘Boating on a Budget’ campaign raised £17,000 at the recent Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show after a fully restored Hunter 19 sailing boat was raffled off during the show. |
| |
|
| |
`Barangoola’ was fitted out with over £700 worth of Barton Marine products and fully renovated by the RNLI’s lifeboat volunteer crew in Burnham-on-Crouch. As well as raising funds for the RNLI, the project aimed to demonstrate how affordable boating can be for those just starting out.
The project leader, David Lewin of FLAG Paints Ltd and former President of the British Marine Federation, said, “‘The plan was to promote safe, enjoyable boating on a budget, primarily to the starter market as these are the people we need to attract to the sport and at the same time raise money for the boathouse appeal at Burnham on Crouch RNLI.’
The holders of the lucky winning raffle ticket were Ian and Sharon Grimster and their sons Edwin and Daniel from Chalfont St Peter in Buckinghamshire who intend to keep the boat in Burnham. |
|
BARTON LENDS A HAND TO BOATING ON A BUDGET
We are delighted to have lent our support to a new campaign which aims to raise much needed funds for a new boat house for the RNLI in Burnham-on-Crouch. The volunteer crew at the lifeboat station is restoring an abandoned sailboat which will be raffled off at the upcoming Tullet Prebon London International Boat Show, and Barton Marine has donated over £700 worth of products to help aid the team’s project. |
| |
 |
|
Barton has supplied the restoration crew with a host of deck hardware including genoa cars, fiddle blocks, winches, T-track, traveller car and end fittings & caps. These products will go a long way to helping with the difficult task of restoring the Hunter 19 Barangoola to her former glory ready for the boat show in January.
The restoration project is part of the ‘Boating on a Budget’ initiative from the Marine Trades Association (MTA). The brainchild behind the project is MTA Committee Member David Lewin who said, “We are delighted that our campaign will be a prominent feature at the forthcoming London Boat Show. It has two simple aims, one to raise much needed funds for the RNLI’s boathouse appeal in Burnham-on-Crouch and the second is to demonstrate that anybody can go sailing, whatever their budget,” said David.

NEW BARTON BLOCKS AT THE TULLETT PREBON LONDON INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW (8th-17th January 2010)
This year’s London Boat Show will see the public launch of our new Size ‘0’ Swivel Block range and our new Size ‘0’ Stand-up Blocks, which were both recently seen by the trade for the first time at the Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam.
The compact range of Barton Swivel Blocks has been specifically designed for use on dinghies and dayboats and also for 5mm control line applications on larger yachts. The introduction of the new Size ‘0’ Swivel Blocks makes Barton one of only a few manufacturers in the world to offer a complete range of swivelling single, double and triple blocks, thanks to the skill and expertise of the Barton design team. |
| |
|
| |
The new Size ‘0’ Triple Swivel block comes with the option of a becket and cam cleat that can be inverted to give both upward or downward cleating options according to application; these are particularly useful for mainsheet, vang tackles and for powerful dowhhauls.
Prices for the new Size ‘0’ Swivel Block range start at just £5.98 (RRP) for the plain bearing single swivel excluding shackle rising to only £47.15 (RRP) for the ball bearing triple swivel, including becket with cams.
Barton’s new compact Size ‘0’ Stand-Up Block is perfect for both dinghies and day boats and also as a turning block for spinnaker sheets and size ‘0’ mainsheet traveller control lines. The blocks have been extremely well received by both the trade and public due to their great value for money, exceptional strength for their small size and also their good looks. There are two versions of Size ‘0’ Stand-up Blocks available, a plain bearing version which has a recommended retail price of £7.50 ex. VAT and a ball bearing version which will retail for £9.50 ex. VAT
In addition to the new ranges of Size ‘0’ Swivvel and Stand-up Blocks, there will be a wide range of Barton products being displayed by our sole UK distributor Navimo, on stand NO48D. |
