Barton
produces over 1000 different products suitable for use on all sailboats
from small dinghies and keel boats through to yachts of up to 16 metres
Ron Barton established R.S.J. Barton Limited in 1948 and was one of the first to use laminated plastic
(Tufnol) and stainless steel to manufacture yachting
blocks which were much lighter than previously achievable. These relatively new materials provided the basis for the stronger, lighter sailboat fittings of the future and achieved very competitive prices.
The range grew
quickly over the next few years with the introduction of many new and innovative products. The late 60's and early 70's saw
a major growth in leisure boating and sailing in particular. A
new material, glass reinforced plastic (GRP), had arrived making volume
boat production possible.
With GRP boats bringing sailing to a larger audience, demanded for Bartons lightweight, cost effective products continued to grow. The new range included one of the first Boom
Roller Reefing systems and a range of Sheet
Winches also made from Tufnol. However, as sales grew, Ron realised that Tufnol was not the best material of the future which could further reduce cost while improving weight and strength.
Ron, again a leader in the market, set about redesigning the entire Barton product range to suit the latest injection moulding process. Barton soon became known internationally for its competitive
pricing, particularly to the cruising boat market where the volume moulding process drove down prices and provided the basis of an even wider range of products.
1985 saw retirement
for Ron and Barton was sold
to the current independent owners,
under his supervision and guidance and a totally new management team
which has seen the new BARTON MARINE EQUIPMENT
grow from strength to strength. The product line has been further
expanded to include many more innovative and exciting products
utilising the latest processes, materials and finishes.
